![]() ![]() Really plausible and an interesting headcanon. Independent Chunin are the equivalent of senior NCO's while Independent Jonin are the Master Sergeants who have been promoted to General/Admiral/whatever and thus know exactly how to get the best out of their forces. The very few who reach Jonin are generally revered by their "Elite" colleagues as they did things the hard way and tend to have broader skillsets, giving them more options in any given situation. They may not have the flashy Army-killing Jutsu, but they have far more experience about the lower levels of things, thus giving them a huge boost in things like infiltration and low-conflict missions. Independent Genin are less likely to get promoted to Chunin than Elite Genin, but those that do are generally far more knowledgeable than the Elite. In my fics, the "elite" Genin are the ones on the team as compared to the "Independent" Genin who either work for departments (such as T&I or Logistics) or go low-level solo and do the D-rank missions suitable for single shinobi while self-training or trading their services for extra training. Sometimes that character doesn't have all the info, sometimes they do believe it but it's not true, and sometimes they're just lying. Just because a character in a story states something, doesn't mean it's a 100% irrevocable fact to the universe. Whether that's the ever-popular Genin Corps who do menial labor and bullshit, or they get tossed to chunin to take care of for a while. My thought on this is that genin that are failed just get shoved elsewhere. informed person ever, since they all have to be audience surrogates for new info all the time, I imagine that they would've seen/met kids that failed their jonins' tests. While no important character is the most. At this point, I think he was really just fucking with Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura so that it'd make the bell test harder. I like the fact that almost everyone took Kakashi purely at face value with the whole "only third of you guys will graduate" thing, but immediately sniff out his bullshit with the whole "you probably shouldn't eat, you'd just throw up" shtick. So yeah, your head canon is a pretty popular one, if slightly tweeked. Depending on the story they either operate in set teams or a rotational basis, doing the majority of D and C ranks while operating as a boot camp at other times. Those that graduate the second Genin exam are recognised as having potential and trained under jonin, while those that don't are put into a barracks of sorts and overseen by Chunin. The other populae idea that goes with it is the idea of a Command/Jonin track. Who barring Naruto and Sasuke were all promoted in inder 3 years. Otherwise there would only ever be less than 30ish Genin going by the Konoha 12. The Genin corps is a vary popular idea for pretty much this reason. ![]() I also think that Naruto's graduating class was smaller due to the 3rd Shinobi war and the Kyuubi incident. So i disagree that "most" of the boot camp genin get promoted, the truly exceptional would, but not the norm. The military in Naruto is very much a pyramid structure, especially since the Chunin are meant to be squad leaders. I don't buy there being more Chunin than Genin. ![]()
